Andrea Clearfield's Music Salon is a continuation of a series of outstanding performances curated and co-hosted by Philadelphia Composer Andrea Clearfield under the direction of Cantor Marshall Portnoy.
On Sunday, March 23, 2014, performers will include: singer/songwriter Chana Rothman; Bill Koutsouros and Animus; The Perseverance Jazz Band; soprano Melissa Shippen and concert pianist Yu Xi Wang; Wanamaker Lewis and the Zazous Swing Band; and Mobious Percussion Quartet.

Andrea Clearfield is an award-wining composer of music for orchestra, chorus, soloists, chamber ensembles, dance and multi-media collaborations, Clearfield's works are widely performed in the U.S. and abroad. Her 27 year monthly Philadelphia Salon, which received a Best in Philly Award by Philadelphia Magazine, now has satellites across the country.
Chana Rothman is a Philadelphia-based singer/songwriter blending bilingual folk and spiritual world beat who has performed throughout the country and abroad.
Bill Koutsouros and ANIMUS play Eastern Mediterranean World Fusion Music. They freely incorporate musical ideas and traditions from East to West, North to South, Ancient to Modern... it's one beautiful sounding world! Their irresistable rhythyms have audiences dancing in the aisles.
The Perseverance Jazz Band brings New Orleans to Philadelphia with its enthusiastic and soulful interpretation of Ragtime, Dixieland, Jazz and Second Line tunes.
Mobius Percussion Quartet uses fresh sounds with high-quality performance and the promotion of new works by emerging and well known composers. They will perform works by Steve Reich and Elliot Cooper Cole. Performers include Mika Godbole, Frank Tyl, Yumi Tamishiro and Jeremy Smith.
The Zazous Swing Band plays the vibrant acoustic gypsy swing jazz made famous by Stephane Grapelli and Django Reinhardt. Featuring acclaimed guitarist Wanamaker Lewis with Bill Nixon on violin, Ron Greenstein on bass and Ernie Publiese on guitar. www.wanamakerlewisband.com
Melissa Shippen was the winner of first prize in the Viotti International ‘Vokal Genial’ Competition in Munich and the Opera Birmingham competition. She made her debut on the 2008 RCA recording Belle Nuit with Vesselina Kasarova. The soprano was named a 2009 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions District Winner and Regional Finalist, and was awarded a grant from the prestigious Giulio Gari Foundation in 2007.
Yu Xi Wang made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2009 as the winner of the Artist International Competition. She has performed in Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kimmel Center and Beijing's Forbidden City Concert Hall. She was a faculty member of The Julliard School, the Music Institute of Chicago, Saint Joseph's University and is currently teaching at Curtis Institute of Music.
